Welcome to Maymont, Virginia
The Virginia Tourist Guide is the most comprehensive travel and tourism information guide for Maymont, Virginia.
Maymont Park formerly the Dooley Mansion, has Japanese and Italian gardens, this 100-acre park is an ideal date destination and a beautiful wedding site. Whether you are a native “Virginian” or just visiting Maymont it is one not to be missed. You can spend many days here enjoying the petting zoo, touring the Dooley Mansion and the picnicking on its rolling hills. Between the 20-foot waterfall, 13 linked aquariums and 200 animals, the young and old are sure to be entertained. Spy on reptiles, take a walk along the trail to spot wild birds and mammals, or visit the working farm, where children feed domesticated farm animals.
Maymont's Wildlife Exhibits are scattered throughout the 40-acre valley between the historical estate, Children's Farm and Nature Center. All exhibits feature native Virginia wildlife in their natural habitats, including black bears, bison, white-tailed and sika deer, elk, gray and red fox, bobcats, birds of prey and an aviary displaying an impressive array of birds, many representing Virginia's wetlands.
The envy of zoologists across the nation, Maymont's bear habitat alone is worth a visit. The large terrain includes a rock scramble, a pond (formerly a quarry pit), and multiple areas for climbing, sleeping, hiding and eating. The exhibit is multi-species—including red fox, turtles and ducks; undergoes seasonal changes on its own; features thriving vegetation with diversity that is naturally occurring; and even hosts migratory birds.
Neither of the two black bears currently residing at Maymont could have survived in the wild. One was orphaned as a cub, and when proven methods for bonding it with a wild sow (female bear) failed, a home was found at Maymont.
Maymont's exhibits include many other healthy, but non-releasable, wild animals. These animals are accepted only from licensed rehabilitators and agencies that expertly nurse orphaned or injured wildlife back to health. While most rehabilitated animals are released into the wild, some animals are deemed unable to survive without assistance and find refuge at Maymont, where they serve important roles as wildlife ambassadors in education programs and exhibits.
In the fall Virginia’s foliage is transformed with colors of orange, yellow, and reds. And Maymont, Virginia is natures masterpiece. There are Magnolia bushes that have been morphed form bushes to gigantic trees that line the drive-way to the mansion. Walking the grounds is most pleasing with the fall cool.
Experience the Japanese garden which is out-lined with a bamboo forest and has a path of stepping stones across the pond of majestic Coy. Take the stone stairway up to the rose trellis past the waterfall. Take a moment on the way up to gaze over the railroad tracks and view the James River. The seasons are marked here by the different occasions. In the Spring and Summer the roses bloom s plentiful as the outdoor weddings. Around the waterfall you may see young lovers sunning themselves or children playing in the ebbs below.
