Blue Ridge Mountains - GOLF

Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountain Region, the third region west of the Atlantic Ocean, is more known for its beautiful views of the Blue Ridge Mountains than it is for prime golfing, but nestled amongst the hills and mountains of the Blue Ridge line, you will find a number of excellent golf courses.

In Keezletown, Virginia, which is near Harrisonburg, and in the center of the Shenandoah Valley, one can find a spectacular new golf course named Packsaddle Ridge. Packsaddle Ridge is a public eighteen hole course covering 7,024 yards. It was designed as a par 72 course by Russell Breeden, and garnered a course rating of 74.2. The course, opened in 2002, incorporates approximately ten water hazards. All of the property grounds, including the rye and bluegrass fairways, are immaculately maintained. The clubhouse on the property, which includes a grill and a pro shop, are elegant, featuring hardwood lockers, a tiled bathroom, a lounge with fireplace, and a large exterior porch overlooking part of the course. Inside the grill, a famished golfer can enjoy appetizers, sandwiches, wraps, and grill items, such as burgers, barbeque, and grilled chicken. In 2004, Washington Golf Monthly voted Packsaddle Ridge “One of the Top 100 Must-Play Courses in the Mid-Atlantic.”

If you happen to be traveling with children, they will definitely enjoy a stop at Deer Creek Golf Park in Galax, Virginia, close to the North Carolina/Virginia border. This family recreation area includes a shorter round of nine holes, stretching 800 yards, with a par 27. In addition, Deer Creek has a thirty-station driving range and a miniature golf course, for the light at heart. Deer Creek can entertain your entire group or family; those uninterested in golf can have fun at the arcade or relax at the snack shop. All of the golfing is under the lights, so you can play in the evening as well as during the day.

Voted number six on Golf Digest’s list of Best New Affordable Golf Courses and claimed “a national treasure” by the Washington Post, Blue Ridge Shadows in Front Royal, Virginia, is a must-play for golfers in the Blue Ridge Mountain Region. Opened in 2007, this championship-caliber par 72 course features eighteen holes and 7,315 yards designed by Thomas Clark. Crooked Run Creek and five other lakes will challenge the golfer in eight of the eighteen holes, and the sixty-five bunkers present challenges throughout the course. Blue Ridge Shadows also offers a practice facility with large areas for driving, chipping and putting. A visitor might struggle to determine which is more beautiful, the clubhouse or the mountain views it offers. You can enjoy both though, sitting inside grill and bar or outside on the wrap-around porch. In April of 2008, Blue Ridge Shadows will open a large hotel with a restaurant, conference center, pool, spa, and fitness center for the enjoyment of guests staying in their 124 rooms and upscale twenty-six suites.

In the Roanoke Valley, there are a number of golf courses from which to choose, including Ashley Plantation, Botetourt Country Club, Hanging Rock Country Club, and London Downs Golf Club, among others. These semi-private and public courses joined forces to offer excellent packages for golfing fans.
Ashley Plantation is the newest residential golf community in the Roanoke Valley, opened in 1999. Russell Breeden designed this par 73, eighteen hole course, featuring L-93 bentgrass greens and bluegrass fairways. Ashley Plantation’s clubhouse offers a pro shop, restaurant, and bar.

Botetourt Country Club was founded way back in 1961, but the par 71, 6,065 yard course is far from out of date. The course rating is 68.7.The club also offers a practice range, pool, and clubhouse facilities for members and guests.

Russell Breeden designed another championship layout at Hanging Rock Country Club. Hanging Rock earned The Golfer’s Guide award of “One of the Top Three Courses in Virginia.” The course is a par 72, with 6,828 yards, and a course rating of 72.3.

course, also designed by Russell Breeden, was honored to host two SBC Futures tour events and a Teardrop tour event. The 6,913 yard Bermuda grass course is a par 72, with a course rating of 73.1. London Downs also offers a practice green and driving range, pro shop, and snack bar.
