Atlantic Coast - GOLF
Testifying to Virginia’s growing reputation as a haven for golfers, Virginia’s Atlantic coast has seen a number of new courses sprouting up in recent years. Beginning in southern Virginia and moving northward, this article will describe many of the beautiful and challenging courses along the state’s Atlantic Coast. Of course, there are many, many more golf courses for you to explore not listed here.
Heron’s Ridge Golf Club opened in Virginia Beach, Virginia in 1999. Heron Ridge’s 7,017 yards and eighteen holes, designed by Bates Golf Design Group, intertwine with lakes, woods, wetlands, and marshes, providing not only a challenging course, but an opportunity to meld with nature and witness a stunning array of wildlife. Heron Ridge, which is a Par 72 course with a 73.9 rating, was designed to be playable and enjoyable rather than overly difficult.
Kingsmill Resort and Country Club in Williamsburg, Virginia, a mere one hour drive north from Virginia Beach is renown for its golfing excellence. Kingsmill offers three eighteen hole courses and one nine hole course. The River Course has gained Kingsmill much of its notoriety, hosting the PGA and LPGA throughout the past twenty-five years. Ranked number six in Virginia’s Top Ten Golf Courses by Golfweek Magazine, The River Course borders the James River, creating a lush and pleasant setting for a round of eighteen holes. Recently, The River Course enjoyed a multi-million dollar renovation under Pete Dye’s oversight. Pete Dye was the course’s original architect. The River Course is a par 71, with 6,831 yards and a course rating of 74.7
The Plantation Course, another par 72 course designed by Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay, has 6,432 yards and a 71.6 course rating. Water factors into eight holes, and the course further challenges players with deep woods. The Plantation Course was honored as Golf for Women Magazine’s “Top Ten Courses for Women.”
Kingsmill offers yet another par 72 course, The Woods, designed by Curtis Strange (a two-time U.S. Open Champion) and Thomas Clark. The Woods’ name is spot-on, with its park-like setting underneath the shade of many trees. The 6,659 yard layout wonderfully mixes short and long holes.
The Bray Links is a par three, nine hole course also designed by Thomas Clark. Next to The River Course, Bray Links borders the James River, and offers a site for both conquering a challenge and having fun with your family. Kingsmill offers many packages to stay a few days and discount rates for golfing enthusiasts. The truly beautiful resort offers dining options, a spa, sites for conferences and meetings, and lovely one, two, and three-room guestrooms.
Williamsburg is home to another renown golfing facility, Ford’s Colony, which claims to have the highest ranked courses in all of Virginia. Ford’s Colony offers the fanatical player three courses and fifty-four holes. Blackheath Course, a par 72 course with 6,621 stunning yards, incorporates water into thirteen of its holes, and challenges players with nine doglegs and bunkers.
Marsh Hawk Course has been challenging golfers since 1985. The 6,650 yards sport narrow fairways and a number of bunkers and natural lakes. Marsh Hawk has a course rating of 72.3.
The Blue Heron Course Ford’s Colony offers 6,970 yards, eighteen holes, and a mixture of par three’s, four’s, and five’s. The Blue Heron Course also borders water and wetlands, and provides lovely glimpses into the wetland environment’s natural beauty. After playing any, or all, of Ford’s Colony courses, players can re-energize at one of their three restaurants.
Traveling up to the Eastern Shore, you cross the Bay Bridge (one of the longest bridges in the country), drive a few miles up to the town of Cape Charles, and you will see Bay Creek Golf Club, which has two eighteen hole courses. Bay Creek at Cape Charles is an Arnold Palmer design, sporting 7,204 yards. The course is beautifully set in nature, with four holes bordering the Chesapeake Bay and eight holes bordering Plantation Creek. The remaining holes aren’t lacking in challenge; there are numerous sand pits and bunkers to avoid. The Bay Creek Resort and Golf Club course is a signature Jack Nicklaus design and offers the same gorgeous views of the Chesapeake Bay and Plantation Creek throughout its 7,417 yards of manicured A-4 bentgrass greens and Tifsport Bermuda fairways. In its first two years, the Jack Nicklaus designed course made most Top Ten lists in the nation. Both courses are Par 72. Bay Creek is a lovely new community with over 1,800 acres of open land and houses, and a 124-slip marina along the Chesapeake Bay.
