Northern Neck - Bed and Breakfast
Driving north along Virginia’s Atlantic coast brings you to the Northern Neck, a relatively undeveloped stretch of small towns and beautiful scenery.
One such quaint small town is Kilmarnock, Virginia. There are not too many bed and breakfasts to choose from in Kilmarnock, but the town will please visitors who decide to stop in for a day or more. At the Back INN Time Bed and Breakfast, guests are welcomed into the historic home, a 1908 southern manor, and invited to relax into the small town way of life.
A cheerful yellow home pokes through beautiful old trees dotting the Back INN Time’s large yard. Inside, the high ceilings and large, original windows filter in lots of light, making the glistening original hardwood floors catch guests’ eyes. Guests are treated to afternoon tea and crumpets at 4 p.m. each day, enabling all to get to know one another if they so please. The dining room, library with fireplace, and sun porch allow guests to comfortably relax in common areas; there is no pretension in the Back INN Time’s atmosphere, simply homey comfort.
Upstairs, the rooms offer the same home-style ease, with hardwood or brass furniture, fresh paint, and personal touches. Each room offers lots of windows and a private bathroom. After a resting through the night, the innkeepers are pleased to offer freshly ground coffee and gourmet breakfasts in the morning.
Just a short trip down Irvington Road, one will see The Hope and Glory Inn bed and breakfast in Irvington, Virginia, also part of Virginia’s Northern Neck. The Hope and Glory Inn has an interesting history, originating in 1890 as a small school on the Methodist Church property. Guests will be intrigued by the two front doors; originally used to divide the boys and girls. This magnificently maintained inn looks like a dollhouse from the exterior. The lush, fresh, and beautifully landscaped English gardens that spread down into the Chesapeake Bay are as excellently designed and maintained as the stylish yet comfortable interior, which strikes of French country chic.
The Hope and Glory Inn maintains seven guest rooms and thirteen cottages equally suitable and adaptable for honeymoons, corporate retreats, private getaways, and family reunions. The Inn even has a separate conference center (as attractive as the rest of the property, of course) for professional meetings; the Hope and Glory owners are proud to have hosted The Kellogg Foundation, Pfizer Corporation, and many other companies.
Don’t get the impression though, that the Hope and Glory Inn is a formal business center; it’s anything but. They offer everything families enjoy; a pool for the summer, kayaks and canoes for paddling the Chesapeake Bay, and a wine bar for relaxing evenings. The rooms inside offer clean comfort, with plenty of freshly colored toile fabrics, white wooden furniture, sitting areas, and private bathrooms. Cottages range from one to three bedrooms, with sitting rooms and private baths. Two cottages are pet-friendly.
The Hope and Glory Inn has received a number of awards and recommendations from top magazines, including Travel + Leisure’s “Top 30 Great Inns in the U.S.,” Southern Living Magazine’s “Four Favorite Romantic Getaways,” Coastal Living Magazine calling it “extravagantly romantic,” and more.
The Hope and Glory Inn furnishes bicycles for guests, as many fun attractions in Irvington are within a short bike ride away, including three golf courses, a spa, shopping, dining, and museums to explore.
As the closest bed and breakfast to George Washington’s birthplace, ‘Tween Rivers Bed and Breakfast offers cheerful, country living in Montross, Virginia. This colonial-style home, built in the 1920s, sits on a beautiful one acre property only 90 miles from Washington D.C. Each of the three guest rooms feature period pieces of furniture and a down-home comfort, with goose down comforters, nice linens, and specialty toiletries. Common areas include the breakfast room, where guests will dine on freshly baked muffins, breads, and other treats (although, with advance notice, the innkeepers are happy to accommodate special diets); a comfortable sitting room; a slightly more formal parlor; and a wrap-around porch, complete with rocking chairs for relaxing and enjoying the sounds of nature.
