Cape Charles - Bed and Breakfast

Driving across the Bay Bridge from Virginia Beach, you cross onto Virginia’s Eastern Shore, a relatively undeveloped stretch of land jutting into the Chesapeake Bay. There are some very quaint towns along the Eastern Shore, one of which is Cape Charles.

Cape Charles evokes a very small town feel, yet has the charm and interest to bring visitors back again and again. Their recently refurbished small downtown area includes a few bakeries, cafés, and cute boutiques. Cape Charles borders the Chesapeake Bay, creating a beach front with calm seas for playing and swimming.

The Kellogg House Bed and Breakfast invites guests to stay the night, weekend, or week in their historic home. The three-story, brick and white-trimmed Colonial Revival home, built in 1924, is beautifully restored inside, expressing a slightly modern and fun take on their own history. The Kellogg House maintains two rooms and one suite; with over 6,000 square feet of living space, guests are provided immensely more room than they would receive in a hotel. All of the guestrooms have original details, such as the molding, light fixtures, doors, and windows, yet they are upgraded with modern luxuries, including feather-top mattresses, Egyptian cotton linens, down comforters, and wireless internet.

The Kellogg room is simple and elegant; sage walls soothe guests, and the dark wood four-poster bed calls you into its plush abounds. The Kellogg room also has a small sitting area and modern, private bathroom. The Virginia room is equally as tasteful, with a comfortable queen-size wooden sleigh bed. The private bathroom incorporates tradition into its freshness, with beautifully restored lead-glass windows and cast iron bathtub. The Virginia room can be converted into the Virginia Suite, with two bedrooms for sleeping, a sitting room, and a private porch, making it an ideal space for a traveling family. Children will love the second bedroom in the Virginia suite, named the “Sleeping Porch,” as the wall of windows underneath the ancient Crape Myrtle trees will make them feel as though they are sleeping in a tree fort.

The Kellogg House provides guests with a complementary wine, soda and snack time in the afternoon, as well as constant use of their bicycles, beach bags, towels, and beach chairs.

The Cape Charles House Bed and Breakfast entreats visitors with a bright white exterior trimmed in a wrap-around porch. Another Colonial Revival style house, built in 1912, the Cape Charles House is even more grand inside than visitors expect, as it is filled with antiques, high ceilings, ornate crown molding, and a majestic foyer. The Cape Charles House maintains five guestrooms. The Julia Wilkins room, rich in shades of blue, has a king size bed, plenty of wood furniture, sitting area, private balcony, and a large bathroom with double Jacuzzi. The Thomas Dixon room excellently accessorizes a neutrally colored room with deep reds and browns. This room features a queen bed, fireplace, small sitting area, and a double Jacuzzi and shower in the private bathroom. The William L. Scott room can accommodate up to four guests with a queen bed and full-sized pull-out couch. This bright room has over four windows letting in the sunshine, a sitting area, writing desk, fireplace, and an original claw-footed tub in the private bathroom. The B. F. Kellogg room evokes happiness in its buttery yellow bedspread, walls, and curtains. The Kellogg room was originally two separate rooms, which were combined to make a nice sitting area and sleeping area with a private bathroom. The Alexander Cassatt room is attractively feminine with a white, hand-painted furniture set, a floral bedspread, and matching curtains.

Each morning, a beautiful breakfast awaits guests in the large dining room that looks out into the well-kept, lushly green yard. With one owner who wrote for a national cooking magazine and taught cooking, each breakfast is certain to be gourmet. The Cape Charles House also offers guests wine and cheese pairings in the afternoon.

Guests at either the Kellogg House or the Cape Charles House bed and breakfasts will enjoy the short walks to the town’s parks, bike rides around the neighborhoods to check out historic homes, or walks along the beach. Nearby Bay Creek Resort offers two golf courses for both expert and novice players, as well as a nice restaurant and marina. Although you are sure to receive delicious breakfasts at either inn, Cape Charles and the nearby towns offer a number of nice restaurants for both lunch and dinner.
