Alexandria - Bed and Breakfast

With loads of history and a location just a few miles from the U.S. capital, Washington, D.C., Alexandria, Virginia attracts tons of visitors each year. Thankfully, visitors have a number of excellent choices in intimate lodging.

The Morrison House is located on South Alfred Street in Alexandria, Virginia. The stately, red brick exterior is surpassed in elegance and style inside. Both reflect a European décor; the interior is furnished with glistening wood antiques, chandeliers, oriental rugs, and rich crown molding in each room. With forty-five guestrooms, the Morrison House is a cross between a small hotel and a large bed and breakfast. However, its attention to service and each guest’s comfort is unwavering.

Each of the forty-five guestrooms boasts “all the romance of Europe and charm of Early America.” Most rooms are decorated predominantly with shades of gold, green, cranberry and cream and are furnished with Federal Period reproduction pieces. Each room has a private, marbled bathroom, and some rooms have fireplaces and crystal chandeliers. One point of interest about the Morrison House is that it is pet friendly! The owners encourage guests to bring their pets along with them.

Also unique is that The Morrison House has a television channel geared towards exercise enthusiasts, with regular programs for yoga, Pilates and strength training workouts. In addition, the hotel has yoga accessories you might not have been able to pack. Guests will find all of the luxuries a high-end inn would provide, such as fine linens, bathrobes, and toiletries; in-room safes; and complimentary high-speed wireless internet and newspapers.

The Morrison House is a perfect place to hold business meetings. Formal business meetings can be held in the library, salon, or Louis XVI rooms. The parlor is an additional room for holding receptions. The Morrison House also maintains an excellent American-fare dining room, The Grille, offering dishes made with the finest local ingredients for breakfast, brunch and dinner.

Alexandria is home to at least eleven other bed and breakfasts, each has one, two, or three guestrooms. The Gatsby’s House Bed and Breakfast is an Old Town Alexandria framed townhouse that blends antique furnishings with modern amenities. The third floor of the home is the guest floor, with two bedrooms (offering a full bed and a queen bed) and one bathroom. However, guests never share a bathroom as the inn only ever books one party at a time. Guests are also welcome to relax in the large living room on the second floor, which has a big-screen TV, or on the rocking chairs on the front porch. The inn is named after its favored host, Gatsby, an adorable golden retriever.

The Prince Royal House Bed and Breakfast is an Early Federal style home built in the 1700s. Inside, guests will find lovely hardwood floors, antique furnishings, and six working fireplaces. The guest room is small but quaint and comfortable, with a private entrance from the walled garden, a small bathroom, and a writing desk and chairs. The Prince Royal House offers guests a simple, continental breakfast each morning, but requires a three-night minimum stay.

Also in Old Town, the traveler will find The Lee Retreat, offering one guest room in a 1918 townhouse. As guests can imagine from its beautiful décor and garden, The Lee Retreat was part of the Alexandria Garden Tour. The guestroom offers two twin beds, a writing desk and chair, dresser, and a ceiling fan for the guests’ comfort. Guests are also invited to relax beside the gas fireplace in the living room or in front of the many windows lining the sunroom. Each morning, guests are treated to a “continental plus” breakfast.

The 216 is a recently-renovated, sophisticated bed and breakfast offering guests the entire townhouse, as the hosts live in the townhouse next door. Inside, parties of up to four are encouraged to make full use of the home’s living room, limited kitchen, gardens, family room, porch, and two bedrooms, one with a queen bed and one with two twin beds. Freshly painted walls, a lovely décor, and gleaming hardwood floors await guests inside the 216.

All of these bed and breakfasts are located in the heart of Old Town Alexandria, which offers excellent shopping, dining, and a short ten minute trip to the big city of Washington, D.C.
