Lynchburg - Bed and Breakfast

Lynchburg, Virginia carries its small town charm and early American town history into its accommodations sector, providing visitors a number of nice choices for bed and breakfast lodging.

The Residence Bed and Breakfast, located on Lynchburg’s historic Rivermont Avenue, has an interesting history. It was built in 1915 as the residence for the president of Randolph-Macon Woman’s College, and various college presidents lived there until 1983. The Residence Bed and Breakfast is full of light, painted in pale colors, and tastefully decorated with antique furnishings. The foyer, with its impressive staircase and high ceilings, feels grand, as does the dining room, with a Swarovski chandelier hanging overhead. The living room provides a relaxing common area for guests to sit fireside.

Upstairs, four homey guestrooms allow guests enough space for comfort. The William H. Webb room is decorated in shades of blue and gold, with a queen size bed, a built-in book shelf, ceiling fan, dresser, writing desk, and chair. Despite its name, the Theodore H. Jack room strikes of femininity in pale lace curtains, white iron bed with white crocheted coverlet, oriental rug, desk, reading chair, and dresser. The William F. Quillian room is decorated in shades of sage green, contrasting with the gleam of the hardwood floors. Two twin beds make up this room. The Pearl S. Buck room has lots of light from large windows, a canopied bed, two reading chairs, writing desk, and an oriental rug. All rooms in the Residence Bed and Breakfast have complimentary high-speed wireless internet, TV/VCRs, phones, clock radios, and private baths.

Each morning, guests are treated to a lovely breakfast on the innkeepers’ fine china in the dining room. To work off their made-from-scratch breakfast, guests are invited to use the inn’s complimentary bicycles, perfect for cruising through the nearby parks and neighborhoods.

The Ivy Creek Farm Bed and Breakfast is practically a postcard vision from the outside. The white home with black shutters is traditionally southern, with a gabled roof and four towering pillars marking the entrance. Throughout its eight acres of lawn, trees, and gardens, remnants of the original farmhouse property remain; visitors can see the smokehouse, springhouse, and a red barn. The main house, however, has been expanded upon a number of times and restored with care. It now even includes a spa and indoor pool!

Inside The Ivy Creek Farm Bed and Breakfast, the décor is as graceful as the landscaping outside; attractive antique furnishings and elegance dominate. Upstairs, the three guestrooms are more country oriented than the formal downstairs. The Locust Thicket room has a pine, four poster bed, pine paneling halfway up the walls, quilted pillow shams, and other pine furniture. The Ivy Creek room has a canopied queen size bed and a slightly more formal décor of celadon and ivory tones. The Ivy Creek room has two reading chairs and a nicely sized private bathroom. The Poplar Forest room (named after Thomas Jefferson’s Lynchburg home), is a Tudor-style step-down room, with a private library, large sitting area, gas fireplace, flat screen TV, large bathroom with soaking tub, walk-in shower, and double sink vanity.

Guests at The Ivy Creak Farm are served multi-course breakfasts, beginning with pastries and fruit, followed by a seasonal entrée, and concluding with a Southern-style dessert. Guests also are treated to wine and refreshments in the afternoon hours, and will find gourmet chocolates and spring water by their beds each evening.

The Federal Crest Inn Bed and Breakfast is an 8,000 square foot Georgian Revival-style mansion built in 1909. The Federal Crest is Lynchburg’s oldest operational bed and breakfast, and their experience shows through their service and attentiveness. Inside, many original details remain and have been perfectly restored, including the thick crown molding, original mahogany paneling, fireplaces, and flooring.

Both the Willow bedroom and the Dogwood bedroom at the Federal Crest Inn have cozy fireplaces and recently renovated private bathrooms. A smaller bedroom, the Birdsnest, can become an adjoining room onto the Willow and Dogwood rooms. The Magnolia Suite offers a bit more space for guests, with a large bedroom with fireplace and an adjoining sunroom. The Blue Spruce Suite bedroom also has a fireplace, large bathroom with whirlpool bathtub, and a large enclosed porch.

The Federal Crest Inn Bed and Breakfast is a perfect location for small parties, weddings, family reunions, and more. The innkeepers are happy to accommodate both relaxed tourists and busy business travelers.
